BRUNET Lace Factory
The following pictures were shot a few years back in France. At the Brunet factory in Calais (Northern France) the tradition since the 19th century is to make leavers lace. And they still make the high-end end lace on the same old machines from late 19th and early 20th century (most were bought from England). This story originally shot for the client is now available for editorial publishing.

Brilliant pictures. I’m descended from Charles Arnett who moved from Tenterden in Kent, to Saint-Pierre lès-Calais 1832. His three sons William Henry Arthur, Edmond and George John were all involved in lace making. I’m currently researching my Arnett genealogy and the history of lace making in Calais from its inception in 1816 when Webster, Bonnington and Clark brought the first loom to Calais by illicit means. So I love these evocative pictures.
